The best steam mop: comparison table
Mopping after hoovering your home is certainly a good rule. The humidity “fixes” in some way the cleaning, which will be more lasting, and eliminates any stains. At the same time, it is a tedious operation. A solution of soapy water must be prepared, the rag must be immersed and squeezed … and then the operation must be repeated several times. How to solve the problem? The steam mop takes care of it, a small home appliance that not only will simply be passed, without having to do all the accessory operations, but which, for some models, will even allow you to vacuum and clean with steam in a single pass.
The steam mop allows, first of all, to no longer use the double combination of mop with rag to follow. The steam mop is in fact designed to be able to vacuum the dust and, at the same time, wash the floors.
Unlike a normal steam cleaner, the steam mop is very compact. It looks like a normal electric broom, but instead of vacuuming it emits a jet of steam. If the hot water, which you use to pass the rag normally, cleans, the steam cleans and sterilizes at the same time. With all due respect to those with allergies to mites and dust. Easy to handle and light, steam brooms are a great ally for daily cleaning. So let’s compare the best models, analyze the selection criteria and see what are the desirable characteristics according to your needs.
How to choose a steam mop
There are various features that need to be kept in mind and that sometimes also depend on your needs. For example, the size of your home, the type of floor and, of course, your purchase budget. As with all types of product, there are huge price differences between model and model, so let’s see what they are due to, and when it is worth spending more.
Performance is the first step to consider for your choice. Performance, in fact, affects the accuracy of cleaning, and also on time. Obviously, if you buy a steam mop, you expect to save time compared to the canonical rag. So, better to opt for a model that cleans thoroughly in a single pass, otherwise you will have wasted your money.
Performance depends mainly on one factor: the power of the heating element. If this is high, the steam will be warmer. As a result, you will get a thorough cleaning right from the first step, without using detergents to remove stains. More power will save you time in another way too: in fact, you won’t have to wait too long before the broom is ready to give off steam. The models that take 20 minutes (while consuming electricity in the meantime) are certainly to be avoided.
Some models allow you to regulate the emission of steam. This is a desirable feature, if you have different types of flooring to treat, or intend to use the steam mop for cleaning curtains and carpets. If, on the other hand, it is only a question of cleaning a classic stoneware floor, go with maximum power, you don’t need to adjust.
You have filled the tank, turned on the steam mop, waiting for it to be ready, and are cleaning your floor. There is nothing worse than discovering that the tank is empty and needs to be refilled (resulting in a new wait). It is therefore advisable to choose models with a fairly large tank, having regard to the size of the surface to be cleaned.
At the same time, the capacity of the tank affects the weight, especially once it is full. And you, of course, want a handy broom, especially if it must also be used for cleaning curtains, upholstery and the like. Therefore, the right compromise must be found. Usually, the tank capacity is less than one liter, but it can vary a lot, from a minimum of 0.2 liters (which lasts very little) to a maximum of 0.8 liters, which guarantees longer life. Consider half a liter to clean, without refilling, about 100 square meters of floor.
The tanks, in the best models, can be equipped with anti-limescale devices, which filter the water. Otherwise, if the water in your area has a high degree of hardness, it would be better to use distilled water to guarantee a longer life for your steam mop. A cheaper alternative is to leave the water in a pot to settle for a few hours.
Among the accessories that never fail, there are cloths to be applied to the broom for cleaning floors. These cloths are reusable, and can be machine washed. There may be more than one supplied. Surely, at least two will be needed, to have one ready while the other is washing. The advice, however, is to buy a few more, and to use only the original ones, which fit perfectly in shape and are more effective.
The other accessories are similar to those you can find in a common vacuum cleaner. They are made to clean particular surfaces (fabric, parquet), or for particularly insidious or difficult to reach parts, such as floor joints, which require a concentrated steam jet. Some models have a convenient accessory for cleaning windows. In addition, there may be pipes that extend the flow rate, useful for high surfaces, or even flexible pipes to reach difficult parts. Bear in mind, however, that the longer the journey the steam must travel before exiting, the colder this will be, quickly losing effectiveness.
Other features to consider
The length of the electric cable is of great importance for the practicality of use of the steam mop. Knowing the environment to be cleaned and the location of the electrical outlets, keep this aspect in due consideration. Check if the tank can be removed. This feature facilitates the use of the broom: you are cleaning the room and there is no need to unplug the cable and take it whole in the kitchen or bathroom for filling. Some models are removable, others stand on their own once stored, a feature that facilitates their positioning when not in use.
The new cordless battery models
The cleaning of the home has evolved in the methods, over the years, thanks to the research carried out by the companies that deal with designing the appliances targeted for this purpose. The fact remains, however, that many people continue to clean their home with the classic broom, then following the activity of washing the floor with a brush and a bucket of water. Nothing more uncomfortable and uncomfortable. Not to mention the fact that it is necessary to systematically purchase the appropriate chemical detergents. With the steam mop you can solve this problem with a two in one appliance, which sucks and washes at the same time.
However, there is an even better alternative, in development, but with some models already on the market, and is represented by the new wireless steam mop.
The power supply to the steam mop can be of two types: electric or battery powered. It goes without saying that the cordless scrubber is the battery powered one and is much more practical than the other. However, let us now try to understand all the features and potential of this appliance for cleaning the surfaces of the home.
The fact of having a cordless steam washer allows first of all a great possibility of movement inside the room, without having to be limited by the thread, which could also obstruct the passages and possibly drop objects placed along the path, accidentally. not only that, the wire collects dust which is then scattered when you drag the appliance, perhaps in the parts that you have already cleaned.
Autonomy of a wireless steam mop
When choosing a cordless vacuum cleaner and scrubber you should definitely consider the battery autonomy. In addition, a battery must be rechargeable and even in this case, the charging times between the various models may be different and influence the choice between the various products on the market. At the moment, this type of product is new, there are few models and their autonomy is not exceptional.
There are steam brooms that cost less than 50 pounds, and others that cost almost 500, but on average, expect to pay, for a good model, between 100 and 150 pounds. In this range, the price differences are explained by the characteristics shown above and, if you want a good model, the advice is to settle on this price. At less than 100 pounds there are low-end models.
On the other hand, for the more expensive models, the high price is usually due to the fact that they also incorporate the suction function in a single appliance. So, you will have the possibility to vacuum and steam clean in a single step (electric broom + steam broom), and you will also have a great advantage in terms of space. Buying a single appliance can be economically convenient: usually the price, although high, is lower than the separate purchase of two appliances. In terms of space, as briefly anticipated, not only will you have an appliance instead of two, but also a single bag of accessories instead of two. On the other hand, two specialized devices (this is true for any type of product, from printers / copiers to cameras / video cameras), usually perform their single function better than a multifunctional device.
What surfaces can I clean with the steam mop?
Surely the steam mop gives its best on the most resistant surfaces that are not afraid of aggressive cleaning, such as the classic stoneware floors. But this does not mean that they cannot be used, with great success, even on more delicate floors. It will only take some precautions. First of all, for parquet and wooden floors in general, it will be necessary to reduce the power of the steam jet. It goes without saying that, in this case, you need to have a model that has adjustable power and, possibly, the appropriate accessory.
For marble and natural stone, it is best to dry the floor after steam cleaning, because the excess water could be absorbed by the porous stone, causing color changes. Finally, carpeting and fabrics in general: steam cleaning is not only possible, but also highly recommended, as the normal rag cannot be passed. Thanks to the steam, you will get rid of mites and bacteria, and you will have a healthier environment.
In addition to the floors, as already mentioned, the steam mop can be used for cleaning carpets and curtains, for cleaning glass, if the appropriate accessory is present, and for any washable surface in general (kitchen surface, shower tray , etc).
The best brands
A very popular product, because of its low price, is the Vileda steam mop. This differs from the others in its lightness, but the advantages end there. These are simple and poorly equipped models, good for fast cleaning but not much for thorough cleaning. The best models are produced by brands already specialized in cleaning appliances, such as Rowenta, Severin. A special mention regards Polti, who has more experience than others with steam appliances.
The omnipresent Philips, and also Black + Decker, have more expensive multifunction models on the price list, which combine the steam mop with the traditional electric mop, thus allowing you to vacuum and clean at the same time.
The steam mop is an excellent ally for cleaning the home. Light and easy to handle, it allows a deep cleaning of almost all surfaces, and not just floors. It allows you not to use detergents, since steam alone allows perfect sterilization. This means savings but also a choice that is good for the environment. Excellent for allergy sufferers, because it kills bacteria and mites. It is found in various models with functions from the simplest to the most complex, and has a very differentiated price range.
